Alsie Gentry Hyden
Inducted 2008
Alsie Gentry Hyden has been a teacher of golf and a proponent of women playing the game.
Alsie began his career as an assistant golf professional at LaFortune Park in Tulsa in 1961. It was at LaFortune, at the request of Mr. Buddy LaFortune, Alsie gave golf lessons to women, free of charge. Thirty women took advantage of the opportunity.
When Alsie accepted the head professional position at the brand new Adams Municipal Golf Course in Bartlesville, he gave more free clinics to women. Through his efforts, women who had never played the game became active participants.
The same scenario unfolded when Alsie became the Director of Golf at Trosper Park in Oklahoma City, and again when he moved to Lake Hefner Golf Club as Director of Golf. The free clinics for ladies continued and Alsie found ways to increase his work of getting women involved in the game. Alsie toiled endlessly for the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department, the State High School Girl’s Championship tournament, and Golf Incorporated. For more than 20 years, Lake Hefner has had at least two women golf instructors on staff.
Alsie Hyden claims he hasn’t done anything special for women golfers, so why all the fuss.
