Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame honors five lifetimes of achievement

By Ken MacLeod

The incredible success of collegiate golf teams in Oklahoma was a common denominator for four of the five individuals who were inducted Sunday evening into the Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame.

Current Baylor coach Mike McGraw, who as head coach led Oklahoma State to the 2006 NCAA Championship, Willlie Wood, who led the Cowboys to two NCAA championships, Labron Harris Jr., a two-time All-American at OSU in the early 1960s as well as the 1962 U.S. Amateur champion, along with Andrew Magee, regarded as the foundational recruit at the University of Oklahoma which helped elevate the program into the juggernaut it is today, joined public course entrepreneur Claude “Duffy” Martin in being honored in a ceremony at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.

The five join an illustrious list that began with the Oklahoma Women’s Golf Hall of Fame in 2005 and merged into the Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame in 2014. All previous inductees, the videos that tell their life story, bios and many acceptance speeches can be viewed on the Hall of Fame website at www.oklahomagolfhof.org. The inductee videos from 2025 as well as highlights from the awards ceremony will be available there shortly. Complete bios of all five inductees are on the site as well.

The award for Martin, who built seven public courses over his career including the four still operational today at the Cedar Valley and Cimarron National complexes in Guthrie, was accepted by his grandsons Jeff Flesner and Clint Colbert, who regaled the full house of patrons with tales of Duffy’s ingenuity and good humor.

McGraw, Wood, Magee and Harris Jr., now 84, discussed their careers in a question and answer format with hosts John Holcomb and Dean Blevins. Those complete interviews will also be on the website for viewing.

Also honored Sunday were 2025 Hall of Fame scholarship recipients Reagan Plank of Owasso and Taven Fentress of Mannford along with Everett Dobson Award winner Brett Wilcoxen, who works at South Lakes Golf Course in Jenks.

The Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame inducts a class every two years with a fund-raising golf tournament the years between inductions. That event in 2026 will be at Southern Hills Country Club at a date to be determined.
